Destination wedding: What to check vs. what to carry on

Hooray!! You have chosen a destination wedding to celebrate your special day, I’m hoping the Cayman Islands is the location and I’m your wedding planner! Planning your destination wedding: What to check vs. what to carry on is an important consideration. When We know the days leading up to the big one can involve some stress, one being packing for travel. Here is a simple guide to help you pack like a pro, whilst still being able to carry your carry on luggage, without breaking the bank or your back!!

Carry On: Rings

This one seems like a no-brainer but it’s an important one! Stow your rings in a small interior pocket in one of your carry-on bags and don’t let that bag out of your sight! I know it’s tempting but don’t remove the rings from your bag to admire them. You’ll also want to carry on any other jewelry you’ll be wearing on your wedding day.

Carry On: Wedding Attire

This is a must. Many airlines allow you to carry this on board for free, just call ahead of time to confirm.  Speak to your flight attendant, they likely have space in the first class closet to hang these items.  Don’t worry about wrinkles, if Cayman is your destination, I’ll have a steamer waiting for you, if it’s not, be sure to bring one or confirm there is one available with your planner or accommodation.

Carry On: Legal Documents

Depending on where you’re traveling, you’ll likely need several forms of identification or other documentation in order to file for a marriage license. Although you may have submitted your paperwork ahead of your arrival,  it’s still a good idea to ensure you sure to make copies of your driver’s license, passport, and any other necessary documents you’ll need, just to be on the safe side.

Carry On: Rehearsal /Welcome Dinner Outfit

It may not seem like a big deal, but with days or even hours to spare, finding a new outfit is added stress that no one needs.  Hopefully, there will be no issues with your luggage, but if there is you will be covered!

Carry On: Makeup

You’ll likely want to have your makeup on hand, as it can be difficult to replace—especially if you’re traveling to a foreign country. However, if you’re traveling with a huge stash of makeup, you might want to check some of it and carry on only essential items. Also, if you’ve hired a makeup professional for your big day, you can probably take the risk and check it.

Carry On: Cash for Tips

Compiling tips for vendors is often saved for the last minute, but if you’re traveling to your wedding, you’ll want to organize your tips before you head out.  I suggest you organize these tips into envelopes and stow them in a bag that you’ll have on you during travel.   This gives you one less thing to worry about when you arrive.  You can give these to your planner on arrival.  We are also happy to discuss with you what is customary when it comes to tipping.

Check: Daywear

Whether you’re bringing swimsuits and sarongs or sweaters and parkas, any attire that’s not directly related to the wedding can be checked. Yes, we know that you carefully picked each outfit you’ll be wearing for every minute of your wedding weekend, but we have to draw the line somewhere, ok maybe your absolute fav bikini, but just the one!

Check: Larger Toiletries

We all know by now that you can only carry on travel-sized toiletries. If you’re bringing larger-sized items, you’ll want to check ‘em. However, medications or other important drug items should be carried on.

Check: Favors and Gifts

Ideally, you’d have any wedding favors or gifts sent in advance to your wedding location. If this isn’t possible, these items should be carefully packaged and checked with your luggage. I always suggest when shopping for favors and gifts that you consider the transportation value, not only you have to travel with them to the location, your guests will have to travel with them home —avoid purchasing favors or gifts that are easily breakable or very large.

Check: Décor Items

As with any favors or gifts, your preference should be to ship any décor items to your wedding destination in advance. However, if you can’t, you’ll probably have to check them. These items, while important, aren’t necessarily valuable enough to warrant space in your carry-on bag. You’ll need to pack them extremely carefully (hello, bubble wrap!) to ensure they aren’t damaged in transport.

Check: Copy of Your Invitation

This is an item that’s often forgotten, but a definite must. Your photographer will ask for this and take some styled shots of your wedding invitation/save the date suite, so be sure to pack a copy or two of your invitation (including envelope, inserts, etc.) so you’ll have one on hand for the big day.
